There's been a version 1.1 update since I made this video. That is one of the things that has been addressed along with a lot of other tweaks

No this isn't really made for that. It doesn't have filters unlike the XFM, plus it's FM structure is much more traditional so you can't use the same tricks to have 4 saw running etc. I made a pack of presets for the XFM actually that is available to download from Sonicware's website that expands the idea of using the XFM for subtractive sound design. I found a way to make oscillator sync like sounds so it can now do things like the hoover bass too 😁 Video on that here: ua-cam.com/video/sm_kKbW1FNo/v-deo.html You should be able to make a Reese bass fairy easily on the XFM using the info in my original 'XFM as a subtractive synth' video I think.

@@ChrisLodyMusic thankyou very much. All i have is liven bass and beats , mega synth, and 8bit. If you could point out some real real nice reese and hoovers for any of thoes, i know its "easy" on bass and beats, but i need a real sounding juno hoover and more reese thats not on the machine now. Do you have any patches like these to sell/pass on, ill get a xfm when i can, but i fear itll be years:(

@bonepileofficial It's something I can add onto my to do list but I'm ridiculously busy at the moment so I'm not sure when I'll have time. It would be a fun thing explore in a tutorial though. That's bizarre! I've had all sorts of problems with the Korg usb drivers since I made this so I'm not surprised 😅

Yeah it's a pretty good one too, the retrigger buttons are an excellent feature

Yeah I've heard so many good things about it over the years and I'm loving it. Just been cross patching it with some other semi modular gear. CV and Gate considerations aside, there's lots that can be done like filter FM 👌

Well I had a good search around after I discovered this and the only place I found a mention of it was at the bottom of the comments section on Matrixsynth under a deleted video, though nothing about using the ESP for CV. So someone else worked this out at some point but it would appear it's not common knowledge

I think it's just a really long recording of noise so it probably is looping, but not in an annoyingly obvious way

Does seem strange at first sight but it's common with midi gear. Midi uses 7 digital bits to store and transmit data via midi CCs. The maximum number ways those bits can be configured is 128, so 0 to 127 generally how that's represented. Nerdy stuff I know 😄

Yes that's correct. Being able to preview steps is something myself and the other sound designers asked for during development but it didn't make it into version 1. I'm hoping it will in the future

@@ChrisLodyMusic Too bad. I would have like also to see the pads illuminated in pad mode when you select a step. Even in slice mode, it’s impossible to know what is on a step.

They're very receptive to user feedback. Either use the support link on their website or the official Facebook group There is a way to change pitch per note with slices but it's a bit of a workaround. You can't automate the slice pitch the usual way, but try adjusting the pitch sweep settings in the Func+Step data menu. You can add very rapid sweeps, so fast they just sound like per step pitches. Make sure you change at least the speed and range for this to work

Actually I've never checked if the external input is recorded onto the mixtape, I'll check that later When it comes to resampling you can choose a single track on the master output. So by selecting master but muting tracks you can have any combination you want

That's right there is one effect unit per pattern. You can determine the send amount per track on the delay and reverb or switch the effect on and off per track for the other effects. The original hardware had no effects unit at all so it's still a big plus compared to that

Yes there are some known bugs in the release version, there's a v1.1 coming out soon that will hopefully fix them all. It's always worth reporting anything you find though just in case it's not already been reported. If you haven't already send any bugs you find here: sonicware.jp/pages/support

Thank you 😁 Yes the SmplTrek has been made considerably easier to use with it's updates. I really like using it as a little hub in a dawless setup, it's pretty much perfect for that

Honestly that's not true at all. I've been making music since about 1998 and the only problem I've ever had is the one in my phone getting lint stuck in it which is easy to fix. I've been through my fair share of cables but that's true of 1/4" cables too

There's no usb or SD card options on the Livens. You can export samples, patterns etc via the midi socket but this requires a midi interface and a computer or mobile device to record and store the files. The newer Lofi-12 XT does have SD card storage and usb, as does the SmplTrek ua-cam.com/video/XWlfJ9GSoJY/v-deo.html

Thanks, I'm glad you think that because making a Squarepusher like pattern was exactly the brief for this one 😄 Overall I was given Squarepusher - Feed Me Weird Things and Aphex Twin - Richard D. James LP as references. By the way the baseline is just a single sampled slap bass note that I played with an external midi keyboard directly into the XT so it's all just captured in the step sequencer on the device. I added the Auto Wah effect on that track which helps it to sound authentic I think

I feel like 8 is enough and you can actually have 15 samples per track using the slice feature, so really that's up to 120 sounds.

The LoFi-12 was a four track (with a faux 5th track if you played something while playing back the 4 tracks). This doubles that AND has a song mode. Also don’t forget it’s eight tracks per PATTERN and you can have 128 patterns per song…. So that’s 1024 tracks if you’re worried…

The Dice setting that you can see in the CFG page can be automated, so you can set it to 100% for the pattern but set certain steps to have different probability. So yes the probability can be per step

Thank you. I make quite a few of the factory preset samples and patterns that ship on Sonicware's machines including the EASY pattern and all it's sounds, so it's all there available to play around with when you receive the machine. The Lofi-12 XT includes quite a lot of the samples library from previous Sonicware machines, but I don't think that extends to sounds from the Lofi-6. It doesn't include any of the patterns either, the included patterns and sounds are tailored to show off the XTs best features so they're very different

Yes it is multitimbral, each track can have midi channel assigned to receive midi on as well as transmit midi so you can also use it to sequence external gear

Glad to hear you're enjoying it, it's one of my favourite Sonicware products too! You can realtime record knobs already by using the 'prm rec' function (Func+PRM Lock) though you can only record things that are per track (grey knobs apart from Octave) so the black FX knobs aren't included. But you can automate the ->FX knob (FX send). The FM engine follows the original chip it's based on closely which can't alter a sound once it begun to play apart from it's pitch so that's one of the main reasons it feels a bit restrictive when using automation. Lots of people have requested being able to adjust sounds while the sequence plays so hopefully that's something that's added in an update

Not yet, but there's been a lot of requests for it as it's possible on the SmplTrek. I know Sonicware want to do a lot more with the song mode so I expect it to be added in a future update
